Colombia, in northwestern South America, is 2,129,748 km², with 1,141,748 km² of land and 988,000 km² of sea. It borders Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Panama. It is the fourth largest country in South America and the third most populated in Latin America with 47 million inhabitants. Colombia is multicultural and the only South American nation with Pacific coastline and access to the Atlantic, including islands such as San Andres and Providencia.
Cartagena de Indias, capital of the department of Bolivar, is an important port and tourist destination in Colombia. It has developed its urban area while maintaining its historic center, the “Walled City”, declared a National Heritage Site in 1959 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The city is known for its rich history and natural attractions, including historic sites such as the San Felipe Castle, the Clock Tower and the city walls, and beaches such as La Boquilla, Bocagrande and the islands of Rosario and Barú.
